We are seeking short stories and personal essays (150 to 2,000 words) from ESL writers in the Tampa Bay area. The theme is a sense of “home,” which is more than just a house, but a sense of belonging. Writing can be in English, Spanish, or both. ESL writers whose first language is not Spanish are also encouraged to submit their writing in English. We also welcome submissions of collaborative writing by more than one person. For example, a family may work together to write or translate an essay. No prior writing experience is required. We welcome new as well as experienced writers. HOW TO SUBMIT Please email your typed or handwritten story or essay to editor@805lit.org by August 9, 2021 or adult students can submit through one of our partner organizations. You can submit multiple stories or essays. Please include a short bio. Example: “Jane Smith lives in Gulfport and is originally from Puerto Rico. She loves to garden.” ABOUT US 805 Lit + Art is an award-winning literary magazine published by the Manatee County Public Library System. Our bilingual anthology will be published for free online and in print to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the fall of 2021. Writers included in the anthology will receive a free copy. AUTHOR PERMISSIONS By submitting, you grant 805 Lit + Art and the Manatee County Public Library System the right to publish your work in print and online indefinitely, to use your work and likeness in promotional materials, and to nominate it for literary and arts prizes and anthologies. You retain ownership of your work and are free to publish it elsewhere, though we request you note 805 Lit + Art as the first publisher. PROMPTS What or who makes you feel at home?
